Exhibition-cum-Sale of handicrafts/handloom and other items produced by rural artisans/Members of Self Help Groups (SHGS)
National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is co-sponsoring the Mahalaxmi SARAS Mela- 2016 to be held at Bandra Reclamation Ground No. 1, Mumbai, from 16 to 28 January 2016. This Exhibition-cum-Sale of Handicrafts/Handlooms and other items produced by rural artisans covered under the SGSY scheme and other schemes of Government of Maharashtra, Government of India and promotional progammes of NABARD, including the members of the Self Help Groups (SHGs) from across the country, is being organized by the Rural Development Department of the Government of Maharashtra, jointly with NABARD, to provide market access to the rural artisans for their products. NABARD has been supporting participation of rural artisans in such Melas and Exhibitions (including the SARAS Mela) organized indifferent states of the country, for the last many years and thousandsof artisans have reaped the benefits through participation in such events.
SARAS is an opportunity to showcase rural crafts, arts, skills, food products, cottage industries products and diversified culture to the urban world. This also helps in generating income opportunities for the Rural Artisans. It becomes a place forinteraction, exchange of innovative ideas, developing skills and spreading knowledge about traditional products for artisans from different parts of the country. This initiative by NABARD is in pursuance of its commitment to usher in rural prosperity through promotion of rural crafts and providing alternate income generating activities and livelihood opportunities to the rural people.
